err:unkey:data:identity_not_found
The identity you referenced doesn’t exist in your workspace. You get HTTP 404.
Example response

Likely causes

  • You attached a key to an externalId before creating the identity.
  • The ID or externalId has a typo or a case difference. externalId is matched exactly.
  • On keys.createKey, keys.updateKey, or keys.migrateKeys, the identity is in a different from the keyspace.
  • Your root key can’t read the identity. identities.updateIdentity and identities.deleteIdentity return this 404 instead of a 403. A key that can read the identity but lacks the action gets a 403 err:unkey:authorization:insufficient_permissions that names the missing permission.

How to fix

  1. Create the identity with identities.createIdentity before you attach keys to it.
  2. Check the externalId for typos and case. identities.listIdentities shows what exists.
  3. On identities.updateIdentity or identities.deleteIdentity, check the root key’s permissions before you decide the identity is gone.
